New To Traveling Abroad?

Are you new to traveling abroad or worried about traveling alone for the first time?

Hundreds of thousands of people travel to a different country everyday. Some are seasoned business travelers, others hedonistic leisure/pleasure seekers. I personally fit in to the latter category.

My first traveling experience was to the Netherlands with a group of three friends back in 2002. I was a little intimidated at first having never before flown and being new to foreign travel. However, having enjoyed a short four day holiday with my friends, I was keen to explore more countries by traveling alone.

Fortunately I was lucky enough to have a friend living in the county I was visiting – with whom I also stayed – therefore eliminating potentially costly hotel/hostel fees. A friend is also likely to offer you free and impartial advice about the country and area you are visiting. This proved invaluable to me, the (relatively) inexperienced traveler.

Within six months of my first trip, I had the confidence to jet off to Germany by myself. In 2005 I traveled alone again, this time to California in the US. Both journeys, although initially appearing a little daunting, proved to be successful and without hitches.

By far my biggest worry was visiting a foreign country not speaking my mother tongue. However, my doubts were soon cast aside as, in my experience, most airport staff today are equipped with at least a basic grasp of English. A relief, as my knowledge of German is non-existent. The airport staff could at least aid me toward the direction of my next form of transport. Having arranged to meet my friend at the destination, I soon became more relaxed, just sitting back and taking in the scenery.





Today, air travel not only simplifies visiting foreign countries but when carefully planned it can also reduce a lot of time. I found it a pleasurable experience and met some interesting people on the way.

The one piece of advice I would give to anyone traveling abroad, be it alone or accompanied, is to take out relevant travel insurance. This may seem a pain and a burden when you are planning your travel itinerary and places to visit but believes me, can really put your mind at rest for the duration of your holiday.
